About
Junsui Shotokan Karate Do was founded in January 2014, the club was renamed from the former name of Shotokan Karate and Freestyle Kickboxing Academy formed in 2007.
In 2020 due to the fantastic success of the club we have expanded further with a club due to open in Darlington alongside our successful clubs in Durham.
The club is run by Chief Instructor Steven Beresford 6th Dan and is assisted by all the fantastic instructors and cadet leaders which can be found on our instructors page.
We teach traditional Shotokan Karate but with elements from other martial arts while we still respect, understand and use the underlying traditional Karate techniques. Our grading syllabus has been developed with the vision of challenging and developing all students on their Karate journey.
A typical lesson will focus on Kihon (basic techniques), Kata (formal exercise) and Kumite (fighting techniques). Lessons are further varied by the use of mitts, mats and practice pads – good fun for everyone to safely practice self-defence, take-downs and throws.
We are a family friendly club, welcoming “Little Tigers” from 4-8 years old, “Tigers” 9 – 12 years old and also “Seniors” from 13 to any age! Our club is diverse with a number of female members (adults and kids) attending regularly and people from many backgrounds. As such, we appreciate people of different ages have different needs and abilities.
Outside of Karate, we meet up every so often and have a night out. All proceeds from the membership fees are invested directly back into the club activities and equipment.

If you’re interested, give us a call or come along. We’d love to see you and welcome you into the club.
